In modern aviation there is tremendous pressure to keep aircraft’s flying in the air. In the aviation industry the ability of an airline to turn around an aircraft at the gate as fast as possible is a competitive advantage.
Standard safety procedure demands that life vests are counted and their expiry dates checked before an aircraft is released for any flight. This check is usually conducted after the last flight of the day as there is enough time before operations begin the next day, but the exercise is expensive as the airline requires having people working late nights just to audit lifesaving equipment. Checks are not done during different halts because of paucity of time and the fact that life vests are stored either in compartments above or below the seats. Expiry labels cannot be checked without taking each life vest out to check.
